Balusters

Balusters (also called spindles) are the vertical members that fill the space between handrail and treads or floor. They're the most visible part of your railing system.
Wood Balusters: Traditional turned designs, square contemporary styles, or fluted profiles
Iron Balusters: Single twist, double twist, basket, scroll, and geometric patterns
Material Options: Oak, poplar (for painting), and other hardwoods
Code Requirement: Balusters must be spaced so a 4-inch sphere cannot pass through

Newel Posts

Newel posts anchor your railing system at the bottom, top, and turns of the staircase. They make a significant design statement.
Box Newels: Clean, architectural look; popular in craftsman and contemporary homes
Turned Newels: Classic, traditional appearance with decorative turnings
Starting Newels: Often larger and more ornate; makes a grand first impression
Landing Newels: Anchor the railing at landings and direction changes
Materials: Solid wood or hollow box construction depending on style

Handrails

The handrail provides the graspable surface required by code and ties your entire railing system together.
Profiles: Multiple shapes from traditional to contemporary
Fittings: Volutes, turnouts, easings, and goosenecks for transitions
Wall Rails: Mount directly to wall with brackets for closed-side stairs
Materials: Red oak is most popular; poplar available for painted applications
Code Requirement: Must be graspable with 1.25 to 2 inch diameter

Treads & Risers

Stair treads and risers complete your staircase renovation or new construction.
Treads: Solid wood treads in oak and other species; various widths and thicknesses
Risers: Matching wood risers or paint-grade poplar
Return Treads: Finished on one or both ends for open-side stairs
Starting Steps: Bullnose and curved starting steps for grand entrances
