What comes in the Evolution system?
It's a complete framing system, not just joists. Components include the pre-punched or blank S-Ledger and ledger brackets, 16-gauge 2x6 joists in 12', 14', 16', 18', and 20' lengths, 2x11 beams, rim joists (standard and curved), 3.5" x 3.5" and 5.5" x 5.5" posts, post and beam brackets, joist and beam caps, lateral bracing, blocking, straps, bolt kits, self-drilling screws, and beam covers in 2x2, 3.5x3.5, 5.5x5.5, and 7x7. There's also a matching Evolution Steel Stair System — the first complete steel stair system in deck framing — with fixed 7"/11" and 7¾"/11" brackets or an adjustable bracket for custom rise and run.
How is steel framing better than pressure treated wood?
Steel's yield strength is roughly ten times that of wood, so Evolution joists span up to 20 feet between supports — fewer posts, less obstructed views. It won't deteriorate from long-term moisture exposure or warp with temperature swings, which matters in Georgia's humidity. As a noncombustible material it also carries a Class A fire rating through Intertek, meets Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) zone requirements, and appears on the Cal Fire Safe vendor list.
What decking can I install over Fortress framing?
Any of it. Fortress states the system "works with any type or brand of decking" — composite, PVC, aluminum, or wood. The stair system is compatible with any type of deck framing, even wood.
What is the finish, and will you see the frame?
Evolution is galvanized steel with a premium Black Sand powder coat, which adds corrosion resistance and a more finished look than bare galvanizing. Black Sand is the only color offered. Fortress describes the finish as providing "a pleasing look that virtually disappears" beneath the deck surface, and beam covers are available in 2x2, 3.5x3.5, 5.5x5.5, and 7x7 to give exposed beams a clean, finished appearance while deterring pests and animals.
Is it hard to install if my crew only frames with wood?
Fortress designed the system with deck builders in mind: "If you know how to frame with wood, you can frame with Evolution." The engineered interlocking design between the S-Ledger and ledger bracket eliminates the need for excessive fasteners and speeds up installation, and the stair system needs fewer stringers than traditional methods.
